NEW YEAR’S GOALS

Happy New Year, everyone!! This is such an exciting time of year because nearly everyone across the world joins in in celebrating the new. Out with the old us, old mistakes, the old burdens- let’s start again shiny and new. One of the ways we do this is by creating New Year’s resolutions: a list of things we promise to do each and every year. Now how many of us actually stick to these things? There have been years where I’ve crushed my resolutions and years where I botched them in the second week. So instead of making “resolutions,” I decided to start making “goals.” It sounds silly that a change of words can do something… but I’ll show you how. Let’s conquer the things we’ve always wanted to conquer in 2019! x

WHY GOALS?

Goals are different than resolutions simply based on the definition alone. Resolution means “a firm decision to do or not to do something” and goals means “the object of a person’s ambition or effort; an aim or desired result.” Goals are about a feeling or effort you want to change. Rather than “I want to be in the gym more” you say, “I want to feel happier and healthier.” Goals are subjective to you and you alone. This is so difficult in our instant gratification world. We want people to see what we’re doing, when we’re doing it, and how we’re doing it. But people can’t see the way you really feel. Sure, you might post a gym selfie… but they don’t know what emotions you tackled that day or the small moments you spent with yourself. Goals are so much more important than resolutions.

THE GOALS
Feel healthier.

This is probably one of my goals each and every year. I don’t mean “feel healthier” in just the sense of working out and eating better… but my mental health too. I do feel healthier when I work out and eat better, but I also feel healthier when I read more, speak into my life more, and concentrate on the good. Make one of your goals this year to feel healthier. Combat grogginess with a face mask and a good cup of coffee. Challenge your mind with a good book (I prefer the classics for a good vocabulary jolt). Teach yourself a new language or instrument. Go for a run, make a salad. Feel healthier, but don’t constrict yourself to just one meaning of the phrase.

Be kinder.

Believe it or not, this is often the most difficult goal for me. I would definitely not consider myself a mean person by any means. I am a huge optimist and always prefer to look for magic in life. However, if you talk to me in the morning before I am ready… or when I’m really hungry… my demon side comes out. I have to remind myself over and over again that despite my own discomfort, it is not a reason to lash out on those you love. Sometimes being kind is as easy as counting to five in your head before you respond. Other times, it takes you walking away from a situation and choosing not to respond. Whatever it is, I will be kinder to others and to myself in 2019 and beyond.

Focus on the now.

This is something I started to work on throughout 2018 and something I will take to the next level in 2019. I started to take pictures in the moment and post about it later, rather than right that very second. Sometimes I wouldn’t even post until the next day (wow… wild). When I started this blog, I knew that my social media presence needed a step up and it’s been a challenge balancing that and just embracing the “now.” My sister is kind of an expert at just being where she’s at and nowhere else. This year, I want to learn from her and embrace the short life we’ve been given.

I hope you take bits and pieces of some of my goals this year and use them to your advantage. Remember: sometimes it’s not about what people can see from the outside but what you do on the inside. I hope you all have the happiest year yet! I don’t know about you all, but I am so excited to take on 2019 and whatever good and bad it brings. Happy New Year!! x
