PLANNING THE ULTIMATE STAYCATION

Are you itching to explore somewhere new this summer but may not have the vacation days or the money to splurge on a flight? Have no fear! Whether you live in the city, the suburbs, or the middle of nowhere… a staycation is right around the corner for you. I love going on day-long staycations where you end the day in your own bed but still get to see a whole new view of your city or town and eat some great food. Let’s get planning! Your dream staycation awaits! x

Find a place to stay- or not.

You first need to decide whether or not you are planning on snagging a hotel room, Airbnb, or are simply staying at home. If you’re wanting to go all-out with the idea of going “away,” I would definitely recommend renting a room. Going with your girlfriends, family, or your SO can also determine the size and needs of where you are planning on renting. My favorite thing is finding an Airbnb. It makes you feel home like a hotel room just simply can’t do. Plus, Airbnbs can often be right in the middle of really cute parts of town!

Think about transportation.

Is where you are planning on staying near a place you are comfortable driving? Is there alternative transportation so you don’t have to pay the big bucks on parking? These are all super important things to ask yourself when considering a staycation. I live super close to Cincinnati. I’m lucky that Cincy has plenty of parking and walkability, but we also have public transport and the option of Uber. Also, make sure to check that your Airbnb/hotel has parking available for you when you arrive!

What’s there to eat?

This is my absolute favorite thing to do before I go on a trip… I look for what food I’m going to eat. There are a few ways to do this to make sure you are really seeing what your options are. The first is, of course, Google. If you type in the address of where you want to go/are staying, you will be able to see “places to eat” around the area. My only issue with this is that it tends to leave out some really underground and hidden gem eateries.

Another thing that always helps is Instagram. This is the best way to see what you’re eating other than the often polished pictures on a company’s website. If you type in your city in the locations option, you can scroll see a whole bunch of food options. Hashtagging your city with “food” works as well (#cincinnatifood #cincinnatieats). Looking up accounts with your city’s name can also help show you the best places to eat. If you’re in Cincinnati and you like tacos, click this link. I’ve been to a lot of taco places here and I can help a sister out.

Coffee, anyone?

If you get on my Instagram just maybe one time, you will see right away that I am a coffee addict. Although the caffeine is a bonus, I would drink decaf just to get a taste of the deliciousness and comfort it always provides. Thankfully I am in a family of people who are just like this, my friend group is like this, and my fiance is like this. Therefore, coffee is always a need- no matter who I am traveling with.

In all honesty, Google isn’t the best for finding a coffee shop (unless you’re just looking for Starbucks). This is where Instagram once again becomes your best friend. Scroll through it the same way you did with the food and you are sure to find more than one amazing place to get your morning (or afternoon… or evening) coffee. If you are just happening to pop by Cincinnati, boy, have I got a treat for you. Here are two posts I did on several amazing coffee shops in the area!

What can you even do?

This is something I often struggled with when I was planning things to do with my friends. I am thankful that my city has opened so many opportunities for cheap ways to have an absolute blast with my friends, but not every place is like that. So if you live in a bigger city, it’s easy to simply Google or Instagram fun things to do. Otherwise… here’s a list of some things to help fill your summer staycation:

  • Hit up the pool or local water park.
  • Go on a hike or take your dog to the park.
  • Don’t have a zoo? Find a local farm! They tend to have petting zoos you can visit to get your cute animal fix.
  • Make a picnic and go to a part of town you’ve never been.
  • No restaurants? Cook a meal you’ve never tried before!
  • Grab a book and head outside! Reading is one of my favorite pastimes!

Every day is a day to try something new! Whether you go on a staycation or simply make a recipe you’ve never tried before, I hope this post inspires you to create a spark in your weekend! Grab your best friend, your sister, or your whole family… make a new adventure this summer! x
